Mystery

I was listening to my car radio and caught the last line of a poem being read..."If you can't be free, be a mystery." I was deeply moved by this incredibly poignant line and motivated to elaborate upon it musically. I began to think about being with a person who needs a great deal of emotional protection from the world, someone who has spent most of their life pretending that they don't need nothin' from nobody.
If you can’t be free
baby be a mystery
When there’s nowhere to go you can stay here with me
You search high and low putting on a very good show
You can say that it’s real but I know better
‘cause I’m no better

This life that you live is gonna get the best of you
Leave you empty inside
keep you down on your knees
Come to me baby oh into my heart
When things can’t get worse they gotta get better
It’s gonna be better

You’re running inside
with nowhere to hide
Before it’s too late
swallow your pride

You’ve been working so hard for something you don’t really want
Waited so long for your race to be run
Come to me baby turn your back on that door
When the going gets rough you gotta say “Later,
yeah I’ll see you much later”

You’re running inside
with nowhere to hide
Before it’s too late
swallow your pride

Before it’s too late
follow your heart

If you can’t be free
baby be a mystery
